Is it possible to query the model for outside and inside surface area separately? Say I only want the area of the exterior wall face of my building.

should not be a problem if your IFC was exported properly with sufficient information to create a filter combination and depict the OSA and ISA in the ITO table.
As I am aware OSA and ISA are not the part of IFC properties, therefore custum mapping is the only way. For i.e. infrastructure elements almost everything is custum mapped and if this works for your use case, do not bother too much:).
