Classifications | Hierarchy, Categories, Description ... best practice?

I am currently rethinking the way how we structure classifications. Basically I want them to be

• sorted in a logical way from top to bottom
• and have a good usability / readability / no complex naming convetion / … they should be self explaining
• and of course flexibility is needed to extend the system

To achieve that my best bet are categories / groups but …

• there is actually just one hierarchy level and the complexity sometimes would maybe need more / sub-categories
• categories don’t have descriptions / tooltips

So I am wondering what are the best practice and/or strategies to deal with that? What kind of system are recommended to also keep in full control of parent/nested classifications?

Also I wanted to know which (unicode) symbols are accepted and why some are not? Is there a full list?

E.g. , ⚂ or ⚐ is not working but or ℻ is … 🤨
